Cameos
What is a cameo, you may ask? Cameos are “a piece of jewelry, typically oval in shape, consisting of a portrait in profile,” according to Google. The cameo jewelry we think of today dates back as far as the 16th century and was hand-carved from stone. People often purchased them during travels to Italy and brought them back as souvenirs. Over time, people valued cameos of women by the beauty of the woman featured, and they were worn in watches, brooches, and necklaces.

A word that seems to be everywhere! Intaglios were originally meant to describe a carving in stones that are the opposite of cameos. While cameos were raised designs, intaglios were designs depressed into stones. These days, intaglios are small, round or oblong disks that feature an image or historic scene, and matted and framed to create a beautiful home decor feature. Parchment Pottery coined the scenic images we have as intaglios to differentiate from the female profiles in our cameos.
